Featured for the Humans@Work Virtual Film festival, we are proud to showcase the short film, Legacy of a Diversity Recruiter.
The film highlights the work of Yer Winder, a Diversity and Inclusion Coordinator for the State of Minnesota’s Department of Revenue. Like many Hmong immigrants who found refuge in the US, her father was recruited to fight for the American army during the Vietnam war and came here seeking safety once it was over. Yer’s story is one of following in her parent’s footsteps, giving back to her community, and paving the way for other Hmong and people of color to gain a foothold in leadership positions within state government.
The following are action items for TA Leaders on D&I to take away from the film:
- Diversity goals should be a priority when seeking great talent. Numbers don’t lie. Whether you have a strong Affirmative Action Plan and/or Diversity goals in place, it’s extremely important that you are actively striving for a diverse workforce. This means that you are actively out in the communities of color, events, establishing employee resource groups, and diversity job fairs.
- Addressing and educating D&I awareness and accountability helps Talent Acquisition teams address areas of opportunities in the workforce. By explaining the “why” D&I matters and the positive outcomes it has, it will encourage and motivate folks to succeed in creating a culture of inclusion and respect.
- Improving inclusive policies and procedures. Whether it is changing the hiring process, removing unconscious biases, tweaking job description to be more inclusive, writing fair and equitable minimum qualifications, or a wellness room for prayers and nursing, this will help make the workforce more inclusive and attractive to candidates to your company.
